“The Surgical Infection Society has provided me with a scientific home from which to grow my academic career. My academic interest of infectious diseases and sepsis immunology fit seamlessly within the focus of the society. SIS offered me opportunities to participate in multicenter clinical trials beginning in my first years of membership. These trials and the relationships that they nurtured will help me continue contributing to the cutting-edge work that remains at the heart of our society. SIS has further provided me with access to mentors who are leaders in our field. The Society values member involvement, making special efforts to involve the maximum number of the membership in the vital committee work of the organization. Finally, Surgical Infection Society meetings are always a highlight of my annual calendar. It is the one meeting I attend that I feel engaged in everything that is presented.”

“As one of the few pharmacist members of SIS, I would like to highlight the inclusive nature of the organization and the unique opportunities the society has afforded me over my almost decade of membership. I found my way to SIS through a surgeon who mentored me on one of my first surgical infection related research projects and opened opportunities to conduct research with a group of SIS members (STOP-IT team). These collaborations led me to attend the annual meetings on a regular basis. The SIS meetings have provided me with multiple opportunities to learn, present my research, and mentor surgical trainees. I’ll never forget the day I spent an hour with Don Fry when he visited my practice site. Our shared membership in SIS and disdain for prolonged surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis spurred a conversation that helped shape my future research and clinical practice. This all wouldn’t have been possible without me finding my way to SIS. Fast forward to today, and I have moved from an ID pharmacist relatively unaware of the SIS to a fully integrated member. This organization has allowed me to network, seek and give mentorship, participate on committees, author guidelines, and establish long-term collaborations. If you are looking for a small but mighty group to join that has the passion and expertise to change how we prevent and manage surgical infections, look nowhere else.”
“My journey with the Surgical Infection Society began with Dr. Charles Edmiston reaching out to me and commenting that I should consider becoming a member. He knew of my interest in preventing surgical site infections, and this was a society, primarily surgeons, who shared common interests in the management, treatment, and prevention of SSIs. I checked the SIS website to learn more about the society and told  him I would like to join, and asked would he nominate me? I needed two nominators, however, but someone on the nomination committee, upon reviewing my CV, served as my second nominator. Once I became a new member, things began to get serious regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and I was asked to serve on the COVID Task Force by President Greg Beilman. I really came to appreciate the collegiality and openness to novel ideas among the society’s members, being able to express different opinions while being respectful. I was able to witness firsthand how different backgrounds and perspectives can eventually align around a common goal. This initial journey of volunteerism eventually led me to receive the President’s award for exemplary service to the society in 2021. I have since moved on to other volunteerism opportunities and currently serve on the Membership Committee for a second term. I’ve worked with many surgeons of various specialties over the course of my career as an Infection Preventionist, but there is something very special about this organization and its members that embraces diversity and inclusion, being treated as a colleague, not a subordinate, as a non-surgeon/physician member.”
